Hyperion's Melbourne Cup 2009 pre-race article

"Hyperion" believes that twelve time Melbourne Cup winning trainer Bart Cummings stands a terrific chance of winning "The race that stops a nation" yet again with his pair of quality runners Roman Emperor and Viewed.

Last year''s Melbourne Cup winner Viewed, who recently won the Caulfield Cup and was third in yesterday''s Mackinnon, looks better than ever . "His run yesterday was an ideal prep race for the big one", commented Hyperion at Flemington, "..and I can see Bart''s horses both having a say in the outcome of this race. I slightly favour Roman Emperor because he carries 4 kgs less and his Caulfield Cup second place was all class. I would not be surprised to see Bart quinella the Cup again".

Hyperion rates lightly raced Alcopops as the clear danger with Mourilyan to make up the four.

"Carbine" selects the following :

1 Changingoftheguard – ex Coolmore owned and Aidan O’Brien trained, really a 4yo by Southern Hemisphere breeding season – trainer David Hayes has won the Cup before.

2 Daffodil – tough NZ mare has a touch of class, topped off nicely when 4th in Caulfield Cup.

3 Viewed – last year’s winner ran a slashing 3rd in Saturday’s Mackinnon Stakes.

4 Alcopop – rags to riches runner, could slay this field.

5 Harris Tweed – NZ stayer, will see the trip out, especially if wet.

6 Zavite – Bart’s son Anthony puts the polish on this one.
