Robert Bishop's commentary on Frankel : "The great Frankel has retired undefeated after his eleven victories.
Following his outstanding three year old career which included a breathtaking win in the 2011 English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, he went on to even greater victories during his 2012 four year old career.
The Sir Henry Cecil trained colt won the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot in June 2012 by an awesome eleven lengths. After that victory Timeform rated him as their highest ever rated horse since Phil Bull started Timeform in the 1940’s.
That success also cemented his status as the leading miler for the second year running. Later Frankel enjoyed victories in the Juddmonte International and Champion Stakes over ten furlongs.
Great Racehorses has given Frankel a GR 143 rating, placing him only behind Secretariat who has a GR 145 rating and one point behind Mill Reef and Sea Bird II on GR 144. Dancing Brave also has a GR rating of 143.
"Hyperion" (Robert Bishop) commented “What a wonderful two seasons and eleven races Frankel has given us. His 2000 Guineas win in 2011 and last year's Queen Anne success at Ascot were two of the most exciting mile races since the days of those star milers Brigadier Gerard and El Gran Senor."
"It was wonderful also to see Frankel star over ten furlongs but I would have loved to see him run in the Derby or King George or Arc over the preferred middle distance course of 12 furlongs".
“We find it difficult to rate Frankel as high as Timeform did, where they give Frankel a 147 Timeform rating."
“To get higher than GR 143, I would have wished to see Frankel run in the Epsom Derby as a three year old and also win either or both of the King George and Arc at either three or four”.
“We all recall the many debates about whether Brigadier Gerard would be able to beat Mill Reef at 10 or 12 furlongs. Although that race did not eventuate, John Hislop was prepared to let Brigadier Gerard run over 12 furlongs and he won the 1972 King George.”
“Sadly we will never know how Frankel would have fared over the blue riband distance of 12 furlongs but, if Frankel had run in an Arc, we have difficulty in thinking that Frankel would have beaten some or a majority of Ribot, Sea Bird, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Montjeu, Peintre Celebre or Sea The Stars”.
"We still rate Secretariat's triumph in the final leg of the US Triple Crown in 1973 as the best ever performance by a racehorse, but Frankel was a very Great Racehorse in our estimation and deserves to be rated at the same level as Dancing Brave, but behind Secretariat, Sea Bird II and Mill Reef”.
